HISTORY OF USS CONSTELLATION SHIP: FRIGATE MODEL

Have fun with the wooden model ship of the famous USS Constellation frigate of the US Navy. It is difficult to find in the annals of the sailing naval history a boat with almost as much diversity of occupations as years of service, that is the case of the USS Constellation.  

Built in 1797 in Baltimore, this frigate had among its missions to seize numerous ships, prevent the annexation of the Hawaiian Islands by the English Navy in 1843 or transport food to Ireland during the great potato famine of 1845-49. It was also the first American warship to visit China in 1842 and was designated a school vessel in 1871.

Today, it is a museum boat available to its visitors in the city that gave birth to it.

It is difficult to encounter in the history of sailing vessels a ship
with so many diverse activities during her active life as the
US CONSTELLATION. In fact she started her active life in 1798 and was
withdrawn from sevice in 1955. Her missions were various: she seized numerous
ships, and defended the Hawaiian Islands against annexation by the British in
1845 and 1849. It was also the first US warship to visit China in 1842 and
assigned as a school ship in 1871.
Today she brings back glorious memories to tens of thousands of tourists that
visit her each year in Baltimore. If she could talk, she could tell us a
great deal of American History.

COMMENTS: Detailed instructions tell how to proceed with the first layer of the
hull, then in (Step-29) how to proceed with the second layer.
This model is a "doubled hulled" ship. The modeler will want to sand
the first layer some so the second layer will lie down smoothly
to give good lines. Also, each mast and yard arm must be sanded to
the correct shape. Detailed written and photo manuals, with number
cross-references for each manual. All deck accessories must be built,
painted or stained for added realism. Taking the time to do the
detail work will give, a truly realistic boat model and very
rewarding building experience.
